Pen-y-bryn Lodge

Pen-y-bryn Lodge is a Qualmark 5-star heritage lodge located in beautiful historic Oamaru. With only five individually decorated guest rooms accommodating up to ten adults at a time, Pen-y-bryn offers a level of personalised attention and service that larger lodges cannot match. Owned and operated by partners James Glucksman and James Boussy (“the Jameses”) Pen-y-bryn offers timeless elegance, gourmet cuisine, and an opportunity to relax and rewind in one of New Zealand’s most charming towns.

Pen-y-bryn Lodge is housed in a Category One historic landmark, reputedly the largest single-storey wooden dwelling in Australasia. Replete with many original furnishings brought to New Zealand by the house’s original owners, and ornate Florentine ceilings, English oak floors and walls and art that the Jameses have collected while living and travelling in China, Russia and elsewhere around the world, Pen-y-bryn will surround you with visual and aesthetic delights.

In addition to being home to the famous colony of little blue penguins, Oamaru is also New Zealand’s best-preserved historic town, with a centre that was designed for a town that was meant to be the most important port on the South Island. The Historic Precinct, with its Greco-Roman facades now housing art galleries, cafes, museums and antique shops, is unlike any other town in New Zealand, and would not be out of place in Europe. Oamaru is also an up-and-coming gourmet destination, with several award-winning establishments in the area, including Whitestone Cheese and the wineries of the Waitaki District, and restaurants Fleur’s Place and Riverstone Kitchen just a short drive out of town.

Dining at Pen-y-bryn is also a gourmet experience not to be missed. Pen-y-bryn is a proud member of the Slow Food Movement and of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, two international organisations whose members aim to provide epicurean cuisine using sustainable and local ingredients and presented to a high standard. Pen-y-bryn grows much of its own produce, and everything we serve was made in-house. Guests who dine with us enjoy a table d’hôte menu designed for them specially, taking into consideration seasonality as well as your specific dietary preferences or requirements. All guests are treated to a lavish breakfast that includes homemade jams and preserves, freshly baked muffins and croissants, free-range eggs and homemade sausage or award-winning Havoc bacon.

We look forward to welcoming you to Pen-y-bryn and sharing with you all that this wonderful town and this stunning house have to offer.
